Goodbye Miss Bettenay

Room 9 would like to say a huge thank you to Miss Bettenay for all her support over the last 7 weeks. We have really enjoyed having her as a teacher in our classroom along with Mrs McIlwraith and we will miss her very much. We would like to wish her all the very best for the future and hopes she stays in touch.

Red Cross Boxes

Miss Bettenay had organised for Room 9 to design tissue boxes using suitable materials to keep them strong and waterproof. We then filled these boxes with school equipment to send to children in Perth who aren't as fortunate as ourselves. Two members of The Red Cross came to visit our class yesterday to talk to us about the wonderful work they do helping those in need. They were thrilled with the kind gifts we had put together and we now hope that other children will enjoy using the items we sent. 

1. Happy Thanksgiving

   In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states.

   Thanksgiving is now celebrated on the fourth Thursday of each November in America.

   Room 9 celebrated American Thanksgiving this week by making a Turkey of their own. 

   

   
   

   

   
   

A few reminders.

I would just like to remind the students of Room 9 that their projects are due in week 7. Choose a person you admire and share information about them as a power point, poster, display board or leaflet. This could be a singer, actor, scientist, historian, sportsperson or even a special family member or friend. Well done to those who have already handed theirs in.

Please don't forget your tissue boxes filled with goodies. These need to be items children can use at school. These are due in by Friday so that they can be decorated early next week before being collected by The Red Cross. These will then be distributed to children around schools who need them most.

Swimming starts Monday of week 7. Please make sure all forms have been signed and money paid. Children need to bring bathers, goggles, towel, thongs and a plastic bag. Please make sure all items have been labelled. This will run every day during week 7 and 8.

Friday 28th November is a Pupil Free Day. Pupils return as normal on Monday 1st December. 

Even though this is a busy and exciting time of the year, please still encourage your child to complete homework and read each night.

In Science, students have been examining the properties of a range of materials. Students designed their own investigation to find out what material would be most effective in protecting a biscuit from a falling dictionary.

Students found that the sponge was most effective in protecting their biscuits. Students will be using their findings in their upcoming design of their ‘Kids Who Give’ support boxes.

Remembrance Day 2014

Remembrance Day ceremonies have been held throughout the country to commemorate those who have died serving their country. This Remembrance Day marks 96 years since the guns fell silent at the end of World War 1. 

Room 9 made poppies with their Pre Primary buddies to remember those who served their country.

Which is the strongest plastic bag?

In science we wanted to test a variety of plastic bags to see which would hold the most weight. We worked in small groups, choosing our equipment, making predictions, investigating and recording our results. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed testing the materials. Think about where you shop! Are the bags strong enough to hold all your shopping?

Welcome Miss Bettenay

Room 9 would like to welcome Miss Bettenay to Wattle Grove. Miss Bettenay is a student teacher from ECU who will be working with us until week 7. We hope she enjoys her time here at our wonderful school. 

Happy Diwali 

The children of Room 9 learnt about the Diwali celebrations held last weekend. Diwali is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in October every year. The festival means 'row of lights'. It symbolises hope, peace, harmony, knowledge, joy, truth and most of all, unity.

Thank you to all the students who supported Wattle Grove PS on the last day of term by coming dressed in their favourite football or soccer teams' outfits and colours. 

Hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday. I look forward to seeing you all safe and well on Tuesday 14th October. 

Don't forget that we start Edu Dance on Tuesday. If you haven't yet returned the form and money, please do so asap.

Measurement

We had spent the last couple of weeks of Term 3 learning about weight and capacity in Maths.

On the Thursday of the last week we completed the unit by putting our knowledge and understanding to practical use.
