100 Years of ANZAC

Wattle Grove Primary School commemorated 100 Years of ANZAC on Friday 24th April. It was a wonderful and poignant ceremony which reminded us of the sacrifices made by the ANZACs. All students demonstrated respect as they reflected on what ANZAC Day meant to them. The wreaths were beautiful, the speeches were outstanding and the choir sang two moving songs, 'Lest We Forget' and 'Flanders Fields'.

Thank you to Kati, Letisha, Emma and Dechlan for creating the wreath on behalf of Room 9.

Room 9 would like to thank Able Seaman Ryan Page who gave up his time to not only attend our ANZAC Day Ceremony, but also for visiting the class to talk about life on board HMAS Perth.

The students listened to stories of life in the Armed Forces and Able Seaman Ryan Page enjoyed answering some interesting questions from our class.

I would also like to thank Alyssa, Letisha, Kati, Izaak and Doyle who all played a significant role during the Ceremony.

Lest We Forget.

Welcome Back.

Welcome back to Term Two. I hope everybody had a wonderful break and enjoyable holiday.  This is going to be a busy term with lots of exciting events. We need to remember that the main focus is working hard and to a high standard. Year 5 have NAPLAN coming up in week 4. We have our ANZAC service at 9 am on Friday this week.

Homework
Please remember that all children must complete their homework neatly and on time. Homework went out today and is due in Friday. They have spellings to learn, Mental Maths, comprehension and word problems.

Reading
Check out the Scholastic Learning Zone on line, where your child can have a go at Lexile quizzes and complete diaries related to books read. This is a great way to improve comprehension skills.

Thanks again for your continued support. Hope to see you on Friday at the ANZAC service.

Parliament House

On the 26 of March I was lucky enough to go to Parliament House with 7 other Student Reps. When we got there we took photos in front of the building. We had a tour around Parliament House where we got to see clothing the people used to wear. We went to a gallery and listened to people talk about problems they face. After that we went downstairs to meet Mr Nathan Mortan who took us to lunch. This was a beautiful 3 course meal, which Mr Sanderson really enjoyed. After we had visited the toilet, we had our shoes polished. Our final part of the visit was in the Chamber where we got to take part in Question Time. This was a great experience for us and I feel privileged  to have been chosen.

Easter Hats

As part of our Design and Technology program, we were given a brief for designing an Easter Hat. We had to plan our ideas carefully before making our own hats, ready to display on Wednesday during the Easter Hat Parade.

It was a lot harder than we had anticipated.

It was interesting to see how our designs changed as we began to make our hats. This will need to be included in our final evaluations.

Wait until you see our finished designs! You will be in for a surprise.

Learning Games

Students can learn so much from games. In Room 9 we have been looking at recent concepts taught in both Literacy and Numeracy. On Friday we worked in small groups designing and making a board game to teach and support our understanding of these concepts.

We have created games to test our knowledge on 'alternative words to said', 'VCOP', 'Money' and 'fractions, decimals and percentages' to name a few.

It has been a great learning experience for us, incorporating a variety of skills, such as Maths, English, ICT and Collaboration.

We hope you pop in for a game or two!

Science investigations

Room 9 were lucky enough to have a visit from Ms Hodges, an Agricultural Scientist. She will be visiting our class on a regular basis to support us with science investigations. The first one we will be looking at is 'what affects plant growth?' This will begin in Term 2.

Room 9 will be working in 4 groups. They have chosen what conditions they will change to carry out their investigation. Group 1 will look at affects of light, Group 2 will study soil types, Group 3 have chosen to see the impact worms have on plant growth and the final group will look at light and temperature.
It will be interesting to see the results.

We would also like to welcome Ms Kalidas, a Student Teacher, who will be working with Room 9 during Term 2. We hope she enjoys her stay at Wattle Grove.

Celebrating Harmony Day

It was wonderful to see students celebrating Harmony Day 2015.

Thursday was a day to celebrate our cultures, beliefs and traditions. It was a day where we could all come together as one.

It was great to see so many smiling faces and interesting clothing from all areas of the globe.
Thank you to all parents who helped support your child dress in traditional costume for the day and for the generous donations. The school raised almost $600, which will be sent to support the people of Vanuatu during their time in need.

Congratulations to Miss Randall for creating such a beautiful Harmony Day Garden Display. It was lovely to read the kind messages and words all the children had written.

Happy Harmony Day!
