Sports Carnival

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Interschool Carnival on Friday. The AFL and Soccer teams did a great job and won their games. I spent the day with the Netballers. We had a fun day competing against other schools. I was especially impressed with their commitment, behaviour, manners and sportsmanship.

All students played extremely hard on the day and never gave up. They were a real credit to the school.
We actually won an award for Best Sportsmanship.

Thank you to Mr Sherlock for organising such a wonderful event and thank you to all the staff and parents who helped support in some way on the day.
Congratulations to our outstanding students at Wattle Grove.

Plant Investigations

Miss Hodge made a final visit to school last Wednesday to review our plant investigations. She was impressed with our results and how well we had recorded what had happened through observations and graphs.

The aim of our group was to see how light would affect the growth and development of the plants. We had some plants under a heat lamp for periods of 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours. Some plants were exposed to natural sunlight. The plants didn't grow very well so we need to think about what we would do differently next time.

For the past 10 weeks we have been looking after a set of 4 plants. We have enjoyed many experiences. We have watered our plants and measured their growth. We had a different amount of worms in each pot. Our plants started to die after the first few weeks. We feel we needed to be more responsible. Some of the lettuce leaves were being eaten by the worms.

After 10 weeks our plants didn't grow that much. The garden soil and gravel were the only 2 soils that helped the plants grow. I think our plants didn't grow much because the pots they were in didn't have holes in the bottom. There was a lot of rain over 2 weekends and the pots filled with water. If we could change our experiment we would change the size and type of pots.
Amy

We enjoyed our investigation and learnt a lot from it. Thank you Miss Hodge for all your help and support.

Eagles Talk

We were lucky enough today to listen to Joe, from the West Coast Eagles, give a talk about fitness, healthy foods and making the right choices. He told us how important it is to exercise, eat right, have good friends, be organised and be on time for any event.

He brought along his friend, Rick The Rock. He got into all kinds of trouble, but Joe soon calmed him down. Rick made new friends with the students in Year 1.

We had a look at what was inside Rick's lunchbox to see if he was being healthy. He made some good choices including fruit and water.

Rick reckoned he was strong, so he challenged Emma to an arm wrestle. Emma soon proved him wrong and won a prize.

We would like to say a big thank you to Joe and Rick The Rock for giving up their time to talk to us today and to Mr Sherlock for organising the event.

A reminder that the Year 6 training session with the Eagles has been moved to next Tuesday afternoon. Please return forms asap.

Assembly

Room 9 enjoyed taking part in their Senior Assembly on Friday.
The students had been working hard learning about heroes, what makes a true hero and that we can all be a hero if we try.

We learnt that you don't have to have super powers like Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman to be a hero, you could be a regular person who is noble, caring and in the right place at the right time.

Come and visit our WOW board to see some amazing Superhero Teachers we have here at Wattle Grove and our Wow writing about who our heroes are in our lives.

Well done to everybody in Room 9 for their wonderful contribution and thank you to all the family members who came along to support the class on Friday.

Wait a minute, am I seeing double?

Congratulations to Audrita and Letisha for receiving the 'Values Awards' for Independence.

Well done to Emma and Elyas who received awards for excellence in Science and to Abigail, Letisha, Amro and Paij who received the Room 9 class awards.

Life Education Van

Room 9 enjoyed an afternoon in the Life Education Van last Monday. 'It's your call' was an interesting and informative session for the Year 5/6 students.

Hannah taught us how to make decisions of our own and how to make the right choices in the future.

Getting prepared for High School is an important time in our lives. It is vital that we make the right kind of friends and the right kind of choices.

It is important to look after our bodies and not be tempted to take anything harmful.
We had a great time learning how to keep safe and enjoy ourselves in the future.

The decisions we make now will have a huge impact later in our lives.  We learnt that it is alright to say NO!

Thank you to Harold the Giraffe for making a special guest appearance at the end of our session.

WA Week

Last week all students at Wattle Grove celebrated WA week. Room 9 created a post card to be sent to students around WA. They drew a picture and wrote about what they do to relax in our beautiful State. There were many interesting ideas including going to the movies, reading a book, going to the beach, playing on the computer and singing in the church choir.

Here are some of our designs.

Thank you to Miss Randall who organised the activity.

What do you like to do to relax?

Cystic Fibrosis

Congratulations to Mrs Harney and her class for organising the wonderful fundraising event to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis. This is the most common life threatening genetic condition in Australia. It affects many of the body's systems and currently there is no cure.
Thank you to all those who came dressed in red on the day and gave a gold coin donation or purchased raffle tickets and merchandise.

It was a huge success.

Rainforest Projects

Room 9 have been working in collaborative groups. They are creating presentation boards all about Rainforests around the world.

It has been a great team effort and everybody has been involved. They have been researching information under different headings. These include location, climate, structure, species, human impact and interesting facts.

It will be great when they are all complete and ready to share with their peers.
